New York Postmaster Provisionals 1845–1847

Stefan Heijtz

The first proper postage stamps in North America were issued by the Postmaster of New York, two years before the first United States General Issue stamps. This exhibit provides a comprehensive study of these ”Postmaster Provisionals”, including both the stamps – essays and proofs, used and unused, different papers and signatures – and their postal history context. The exhibit is shown as a pdf file.

Stefan Heijtz has kindly agreed to make his exhibits available on Netex. They can also be seen on his own website.
